San Diego, CA 92103
The mission of Aseltine School is to establish a partnership with "at-risk" youth in which we imaginatively challenge, support and prepare them to gain better understanding and insight into the barriers that have limited their access to "mainstream" school and community; develop the skills, knowledge and resources necessary to overcome these barriers; develop the self-esteem that transforms fatalism and self-doubt into purposeful action; and make an independent and productive transition back into school, employment and community.

We went to a birthday party for a kid at our son's school yesterday. It was really interesting. The birthday boy was very much like our son. His public school couldn't handle him and sent him to the nonpubic. He had all kinds of behavior issues but is doing great now. He's a third greater, but a lot of the work he does now is sixth grade. It's a running theme with many kids at Aseltine School. The public school says this kid is out of control, and the Aseltine school says no, this kid is brilliant. Our son was only doing 50% of his work and having horrible behavior problems at his public school. He was academically at level with his peers. At Aseltine, he completes 100% of his work, and the work he's doing is as much as 2 years ahead of his grade level, depending on the subject. His behavior issues have all but disappeared. This school is like magic! This school is HOG-WARTS!

I went to Aseltine in the 70's when it was initially in a house. John was my Counselor and to this day if it were not for his and the school's commitment to helping children I'd be in prison. At an early age, I was violent. Such that I could not attend mainstream school. To this day I do not know what happened to me to render me so angry and hostile. So I took my experience at Aseltine and used it to help adults and juveniles in prison. I am 54 now, have three sons. All grown now and for those things I am most proud of, I am eternally grateful to Mrs. Aseltine and John.Love always,Anthony.

I attended this school in the early 90's and the experience has stayed with me my whole life. I was a very difficult child in many ways. I had been in classes for s.e.d children for my entire academic career and was very familiar with the system. I wish I could say that I flourished but sadly that is not the case. That is solely my own fault. I was the kinda child that knew everything and better then anyone. When I first got to this school I could tell that this was a different place then any other school I had been to. These people saw me for what I was and was not. The teachers and staff came from all walks of life. I was exposed to many things that I would have otherwise never seen or experienced. I over the course of my life look back and wish that I would have taken the guidance that they try very hard to give. This school and staff afforded me every opportunity to succeed. I wish that I would have listened. Now that I am in my mid thirties and a parent of a child with behavior problems I often find myself saying things to my son that I learned at this school. So I only have good things to say about this school.
